Took my sister to NYC on the 29th NOV... yes, im bloggin this incident quite late as i have been too busy having FUNFUNFUN!!
Here is a quick rundown of how we got there and what we did.
COusin CHi CHi drove for about an hr to NEW HAVEN METRO station.
Because we started out pretty late, all the closest parking stations were full - so we had to park at TEMPLE st. We were lucky to get in and park, cos when we got out of hte carpark we saw that they had placed a FULL sign... phew...
TOok a quick brisk walk to the Station. Bought a train ticket to GRAND CENTRAL STATION for $28 each. Hopped on the train and rode for 1 1/2 hrs.
Grand central Terminal station is HUGE! similar to QVB with shopping and a lil market - but the actual station is 10 times bigger than SYDNEY's.
Played photographer there for a while and then headed out onto the streets. Im ok with the streets of where we were..... cos the parallel sts were all avenues by numbers and the perpendicular ones were streets by numbers... easy to understand and get around. Because we only had a day, i let TRang soak in the NY air, people and the general hustle and BUZZ of the CITY. she was GOB smacked!! My cousin could hardly keep up, poor thing, but she was a great sport - taking the time and psyching herself up to "DO THE WALK" for several hrs. SHe is afraid of heights - but we took her to EMPIRE STATE BUILDING - she has never been (cos she is afraid of heights) but she went up with us and even peered over the edge! SHe is amazing and we LOVE her for it!!
After that, we hit the shops - MACY, and ZARA, CACHE and any jewelery stores we saw along the way. Walked up, up, up to TIMES SQUARE, played photographer there also - it was amazing, walking the streets of NY again.
Before we knew it, it was about 5pm. We took the subway (which i encouraged them to take, cheap and fun - all part of the experience) to Grant st - CHINATOWN. We were hungry :) Now, since i didnt get a really good chance to explore CHINATOWN with THANH, and learn the streets, i sorta got lost :( no matter, met a few people and basically followed the crowds - chinatown was nearly closed by then - pretty disappointing, but we found a shop, ate and hailed a cab back to GRAND central terminal.
All in a day's walk!! caught the train and walked in the dark (hehehe followed a young family to our carpark)and chatted all the way home!! Soo tiring but was exhilerating!!!
Why didnt we drive? well, my cousin Truc usually does for work purposes, but it takes him 2 hrs by car (if he beats the traffic) or it could take 4 hrs - peak time! Then you have to talk about parking in NYC for $40 a night if he is lucky to find one - and check into a hotel for over $250 a night (im talking 3 star and up). A day was good - it helps you appreciate the beauty of NY... check out our pics..
